Where should the couch go, and which way should it face?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Back the sofa against a solid wall and turn it side-on or at an angle to the front door: you see who comes in without sitting in the door’s straight line. Feng shui reads the sofa as the main seat of the house, and a main seat wants a mountain behind it, not a window or a walkway.

The seat of the house, and the mountain behind it

Every room has one seat the rest of it turns toward, and in the living room it is the main sofa, where the household sits together at the end of the day. Feng shui calls it the main seat and wants three things of it: a mountain behind, open ground in front, and a clear view of whatever comes through the door.

Feng shui’s favorite landscape is shaped like an armchair: high ground behind, two lower ridges reaching forward like arms, the Green Dragon on the left and the White Tiger on the right, and level ground spread at its feet. A sofa is that armchair made small, a high back and two arms around an open seat. The room only has to give it what its own back cannot: a solid wall, standing behind it the way the mountain stands behind the valley.

With a wall behind it, nothing passes at the backs of the people sitting there, and the whole room, door included, lies before them. Feng shui holds that a backed main seat makes a backed household: the family settles into the room together, and whoever runs the home stands on firmer ground.

Nothing behind it. A window behind the sofa leaves wind and light where the mountain should be; a walkway puts footsteps there; a sofa floating mid-room has only open floor at its back. Feng shui links a seat like this to less support at work and more talk going on behind your back, and people who sit in it rarely sink all the way in.

The door behind it. A sofa turned away from the front door leaves its back open to everything that comes in. Feng shui calls it being open from behind and counts few seats worse; people who sit like this tend to stay a little on edge, and the tradition links it to things at work moving without their knowing.

The door straight ahead. A sofa square in the door’s line meets the rush of chi head-on, just as a bed in line with the door does. Feng shui holds that whoever sits there finds it hard to stay put, and that the living room becomes the place where small arguments start.

SCHOOL CONSENSUS · HOW IT COMES INDOORSIn the living room, the mountain is the wall behind the sofa, and the door is watched from the side: near enough to see who comes in, out of the line its chi runs along. Where no wall can be had, a console table or a low cabinet behind the sofa raises a small mountain of its own.

What to look for in your room

  • Your main sofa has a window or a walkway behind it, or stands out in the middle of the room.
  • Sitting on the main sofa, you face away from the front door and cannot see who comes in.
  • Open the front door and the main sofa sits right in its straight line, directly facing it.
WHAT THE SCHOOL WANTS INSTEAD

The main sofa backs onto an unbroken solid wall and sits side-on to the front door.

From above. As it is, the sofa stands out in the room with the front door behind it, so whoever comes in arrives at the sitters’ backs. Moved against the solid wall at the far end, it has the wall behind it and the door in view across the room, at an angle and out of its line.

A primary seat requires solid backing; an open back invites unrest.

How to fix it, in order

Move the sofa so its back meets a solid wall

Measure first, then look for the wall that gives both at once: nothing open behind the sofa, and the front door in view across the room without the sofa standing in its line. If the TV has to move to face the sofa again, move it too; the seat comes first.

Turn the sofa side-on to the front door

When the sofa cannot move to another wall, turning it can still take the door out from behind you. Side-on, you catch whoever comes in from the corner of your eye; at an angle, you see them outright. Either is better than a door at your back.

Set a console table or a low cabinet behind the sofa

Where the sofa has to stay in front of a window or out in the open room, give it a back of its own. A console table or a low cabinet, close to the height of the sofa back and as long as the space allows, stands in for the mountain; solid wood suits it better than glass.

Stand a folding screen between the front door and the sofa

For a sofa that can neither turn nor move, whether its back is to the door or it sits in the door’s straight line, break the line instead. A screen just inside the front door, or an entry cabinet in the same spot, makes arriving chi turn before it reaches the seat.

Hang a mountain landscape above the sofa

Once the sofa has its wall, hang a calm mountain landscape above it, so the mountain behind the seat can be seen as well as felt.

If you own the place: when you plan a living room from scratch, give the sofa the longest unbroken wall before you settle the outlets and the TV, and run the path from the front door along one side of the room. It is optional; moving the sofa already gives the seat its wall.

Questions people ask

Is it bad feng shui to put a couch in front of a window?

Feng shui reads glass behind the sofa as a main seat with nothing at its back: light and drafts where the mountain should be. If the window wall is the only place the sofa fits, set a console table or a low cabinet between the sofa and the glass.

Is it better to place my sofa facing the door or away from it?

Neither, in feng shui’s eyes. Facing away puts the door at your back, which it counts among the worst ways to sit; facing it head-on puts you in the door’s straight line, where the rush of chi lands first. The answer lies between the two: side-on or at an angle, with the door in view.

Can the sofa float in the middle of the room?

It can, with help. A sofa out in the room has open floor behind it, a seat without a mountain, so give it one: a console table or a low cabinet along its back. Then keep it out of the front door’s line, with the door still in view.

What if the front door opens straight onto the sofa?

Then the sofa sits in the door’s straight line and meets the rush of chi first. Move it out of that line if the room allows; if not, an entry cabinet or a screen just inside the door turns the chi aside before it reaches the seat.
