Is it bad feng shui to have your bed facing the door?
Yes, when the bed sits on the door’s straight line. The door is the mouth of the room, and the chi that comes in runs straight at you while you sleep. Move the bed to where you see the door at an angle; if it cannot move, stand a folding screen between the door and the bed.

A door aimed at the bed
Feng shui reads a room from its door. The door is the mouth of the room, where chi comes in, and chi that enters on a straight line keeps going straight, the way wind runs down a long hall. Whatever stands on that line takes the full force of all that enters. For a chair that is a nuisance; for a bed, where you lie for hours with your guard down, feng shui calls it a door rushing at the bed.
Feng shui’s whole art lies in making chi slow down and stay, and it keeps a short rule for it: straight lines strike, bends gather. The bedroom is meant to be the stillest pool in the house, where chi comes to rest around you through the night. A door in line with the bed turns that pool into a channel. Footsteps and hall light reach you first, drafts come straight in, and the room never quite closes around you.
The answer is a spot feng shui calls the commanding position: a wall at your back and the door in sight, but off to one side, so whatever comes in passes you by. Feng shui holds that a sleeper placed this way rests easy, knowing nothing arrives unseen, and stands on surer footing by day. On the door’s line, people often wake more easily and feel a little exposed, as if the room were never quite their own.
What to look for in your room
Open the bedroom door and look straight in: the bed, its foot or its head sits on that straight line.

How to fix it, in order
Stand in the doorway and look straight in: the bed should not be on that line. The best spot is on the wall across from the door but off to one side, or on a side wall, where you see the door from bed at an angle. Keep the headboard against a solid wall as you move it.
When the room fits the bed only one way, break the line instead. A folding screen of wood, rattan or fabric, a little taller than the mattress, set between the door and the foot of the bed, makes the chi turn before it reaches you, and chi that turns slows down. Leave a clear path around it.
Where floor space is short, a heavy curtain on a tension rod inside the door frame does the screen’s work. Draw it at night; by day it can stay gathered to one side.
A closed door is the lightest fix, and it costs nothing. Feng shui holds that a shut door softens the line, so on nights when nothing else is possible, close it.
Questions people ask
People call it that when the foot of the bed points straight out the door, after the old custom of carrying a coffin out of the house feet first. Feng shui looks past the name to the line itself, chi rushing in at the door, and the first fix is the same either way: move the bed off that line.
Feng shui does not want the door on the bed’s line at all, whether your feet or your head point toward it; each end simply takes the rush in a different place. The best spot is where you see the door at an angle from bed, with a solid wall behind the headboard.
Many bedrooms take the bed only one way. Then work on the line instead of the bed: a folding screen or a heavy curtain between the door and the bed makes the chi turn before it reaches you, and a door closed at night quiets the line further.
It is feng shui’s name for a bed that sees the door without facing it. From where you lie, you can see who comes in, and the chi swings past you instead of running at you. The commanding position in the rulebook →
