Where should the bed go, by feng shui?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Put the headboard against a solid wall, where you can see the bedroom door from bed without lying on its straight line, and leave a way in on both sides. Feng shui calls it the commanding position: a mountain at your back, the door before your eyes, and chi that gathers around you instead of rushing at you.

A mountain behind, open ground before

Feng shui places a bed the way it places a house: with a mountain at its back and open ground before it. Indoors, the mountain is the solid wall at the head of the bed, and the open ground is the floor between you and the door, the space feng shui calls the bright hall. A bed with both is the first thing feng shui looks for in a bedroom; everything else in the room is read after it.

The picture behind it is an old one. A fortunate site has a hill rising at its back, the Black Tortoise; lower ridges curving in on its left and right, the Green Dragon and the White Tiger, like the arms of a chair; and open ground before it, the bright hall. Chi that arrives is held close there, and the wind cannot scatter it. Feng shui calls this sheltering the wind and gathering chi, and a bed is the smallest place in a home where the whole picture can be drawn again.

Feng shui ranks the three in order: the wall behind you first, then the door, then the balance of the two sides. It holds that a sleeper backed this way rests deep, wakes clear, carries that steadiness into the day and finds people readier to lend a hand. Leave the head of the bed open to the room, and chi comes at you from every side with nothing to steady you.

SCHOOL CONSENSUS · HOW IT COMES INDOORSIn a bedroom, the hills become furniture. The solid wall, or a tall solid headboard where the wall falls short, stands in for the mountain; a nightstand and a lamp on each side close the arms; and the floor kept clear in front of the bed is the bright hall, where chi from the door slows and settles before it reaches you.

What to look for in your room

  • The headboard touches no wall because the bed stands out in the room, or the headboard is open metalwork or slats you can see through.
  • A double bed has one side flat against the wall, so only one side has a walkway, or there is only one nightstand.
WHAT THE SCHOOL WANTS INSTEAD

The head of the bed rests against an unbroken solid wall, with a walkway on both sides.

Lying in bed you can see the bedroom door, but the bed is not in the door’s straight line.

How to fix it, in order

Move the bed so the headboard meets a solid wall

Pull the bed out of the middle of the room, or away from the window, until the headboard rests against an unbroken wall. Among the solid walls, choose the one from which you see the bedroom door at an angle rather than straight on.

Replace an open-frame headboard with a solid one

Metal rails and slats you can see through leave the head of the bed open to the room. A solid wood or upholstered headboard, taller than your pillows, gives you a wall at your back even where the bed stands a little way out from it.

Add a matching nightstand and lamp on each side

For a bed shared by two, leave a way in on each side and give each side the same: a nightstand and a lamp of the same height. Feng shui holds that when the two sides match, chi comes in pairs too.

If you own the place: when you build or renovate, draw the bed on the plan before the outlets: an unbroken wall at its head, the door in view at an angle, and a switch within reach on each side. It is optional; the fixes do most of the work.

Questions people ask

Where should the bed be placed in feng shui?

With its head to a solid wall, the door in sight at an angle and a way in on each side. If the room cannot give all three, hold on to the wall first: feng shui counts a mountain behind the sleeper as the one thing a bed should never go without.

Can the bed be in the middle of the room?

Feng shui says a bed with nothing behind it hangs in the air: chi reaches you from every side and nothing steadies you. If it has to stand out in the room, give it a tall solid headboard, and a piece of furniture behind it, such as a low cabinet, to stand in for the wall.

Is it bad to have one side of the bed against the wall?

Feng shui wants a double bed even on both sides. Pushed against one wall, it leaves one sleeper hemmed into the corner, which the tradition reads as one partner always yielding to the other, or, for someone single, as a bed laid out for one. If the room allows, pull the bed out so both sides are open.

Which direction should the bed face?

Feng shui places the bed by the room first: the wall, the door and the two sides. A compass direction comes after, from a second method that works from your birth date and names the four directions that suit you. The best direction to sleep →
