Is it bad feng shui to sleep under a window?

Form SchoolBedroom6 min readUpdated Oct 1, 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

Yes, by feng shui’s reading. A window at the head leaves nothing solid behind you, and chi that comes in on the wind cannot settle where you sleep. Turn the bed so the headboard meets a solid wall; if it has to stay, a tall solid headboard and heavy curtains drawn at night rebuild most of that wall.

Behind your head, a mountain or the wind

Feng shui wants the place where you sleep sheltered from behind. A solid wall at the head of the bed is your mountain, the Black Tortoise at your back, keeping watch through the hours you are least on guard. A window turns that wall into an opening. Light, drafts, the street and the whole outside come in there, and with the headboard beneath it, all of it arrives right behind your head.

Feng shui takes its name from wind and water, and the two do opposite things to chi: it rides the wind and scatters, and it meets water and gathers. So feng shui prizes shelter from the wind above almost everything, and a headboard fears nothing more than standing in it. Under a window, the one spot in the room that should hold chi close becomes the spot where the wind comes in.

Give the head of the bed a wall again and the room closes around you like cupped hands. Feng shui holds that a sleeper with a mountain behind rests deeper and meets the day with more backing. With a window there, people often find their rest lighter than it should be, and the support they look for by day a little harder to find.

SCHOOL CONSENSUS · HOW IT COMES INDOORSFeng shui gives sleep the most sheltered spot in the room: a wall at the head, the window off to one side, nothing moving behind the pillows. Where the bed has to stay under the glass, the wall is rebuilt in layers, solid wood at the head of the bed and heavy cloth across the window after dark.

What to look for in your room

The head of your bed is pushed against a window, or a window opens right above the headboard.

What it looks like in a real room

LuckMove read this bedroom from a single ordinary photograph. Of its seven findings, the second is this very layout: an open iron bed frame with its head pushed under the window, and nothing solid behind the pillows.

The first fix here was heavy lined curtains on the rail already in place, so the window stands in for a wall at night. With every fix of the reading made, the room drawn from the same photograph reads 68, up from 52. See the full reading of this room →

Bed under a window

A bed seeks the stillness of a mountain; an exterior window belongs to movement.

How to fix it, in order

Turn the bed so the headboard meets a solid wall

This is the fix that goes to the root, and often it costs nothing. Before you move anything, measure: the bed needs a clear path on both sides and should not end up facing the door head on.

Draw heavy curtains at night

If the bed has to stay, let the window become a wall after dark. Choose lined, full-length curtains in a solid, calm color and close them every night. A tension rod or the existing rail means no drilling.

Add a tall, solid headboard

Wood or a padded, upholstered board, taller than your pillows. Open metal frames and slatted headboards let the window show through; a solid one gives your head something to rest against. Freestanding headboards need no screws in the wall.

If you own the place: the lasting answer is a layout that gives the bed a solid wall, which sometimes takes a renovation, such as boxing in a beam first. Treat that as optional; the fixes do most of the work.

Questions people ask

What about a bed facing a window?

Feng shui minds a window at the foot far less than one at the head, since your back still has its wall. It asks only that the window be dressed at night: a bedroom wants to be tucked away, and bare glass lets light and the street fall straight onto the bed. The rule on a bare window →

Does a headboard fix a bed under a window?

A tall, solid headboard does most of the work, because it gives your head a wall to rest against again. Pair it with heavy curtains drawn at night, and the opening behind you is closed twice over, by wood and by cloth.

What if there is no other wall for the bed?

In plenty of bedrooms the bed fits only one way. Then treat the window instead of moving the bed: a solid headboard, heavy lined curtains closed every night, and a clear path on both sides, so the bed keeps its shelter even where it cannot have its wall.

Which direction should my bed face?

Start with what surrounds the bed: a solid wall behind it, and no straight line from the door. A compass direction can come after that, worked from your birth date, which gives you four good directions to choose from. The best direction to sleep →
