Is a beam over the bed bad feng shui?

Form SchoolBedroom5 min readUpdated Oct 1, 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

Yes. Feng shui counts a beam across the bed as the heaviest thing in a bedroom: the bone of the house, bearing down on you night after night. Move the bed so no part of it lies under the beam; if it cannot move, a tall solid headboard and two nightstands take the weight.

The bone of the house, above your bed

Feng shui calls the beam the bone of the house, the timber that carries the weight of everything above it. Over a hallway it is only structure. Over the place where you lie down, eyes closed and guard lowered, feng shui reads that weight as resting on you, and in its eyes nothing in a bedroom weighs more than a beam across the bed.

When you lie down, the ceiling is your sky, and feng shui wants that sky open. A beam draws a hard line across it, a shape feng shui calls pressure from above, and it makes no difference whether the line crosses the headboard, the middle or the foot. The answer has a quiet logic of its own. Step out from under the beam, even by a foot or two, and the weight its shape brings down falls on empty floor. Box the beam in behind a flat ceiling, and the shape that pressed is simply gone.

Clear the bed of it and the room opens above you. Feng shui holds that someone who sleeps with open space overhead rests deeper, wakes clearer and has room to rise in the day’s work. Under a beam, people often say the room seems to press down on them, and that every step forward takes more out of them than it should.

What to look for in your room

Lie down and look up: an exposed beam crosses above the bed, over the headboard, across the middle or at the foot.

From above. As it is, a beam crosses the room right over the middle of the bed. Turned to run along the left wall, on the door’s side of the beam, the bed keeps a solid wall at its head, sees the door at an angle, and has nothing over it.

Ceiling: exposed joists span directly overhead → cover the raw beams with stretched fabric or a canopy

How to fix it, in order

Move the bed out from under the beam

Often a foot or two is enough; what matters is that no part of the bed lies under the beam. Keep the headboard against a solid wall as you go. Turning the bed to run beside the beam, rather than beneath it, often finds the space.

Add a tall solid headboard, with a nightstand on each side

When the bed cannot leave the beam, feng shui answers the weight with wood. A tall headboard of solid wood and a nightstand on each side stand beneath the line like posts under a roof, so the weight overhead comes down on them rather than on you.

Raise a soft fabric canopy over the bed

A hard line overhead can also be answered with a soft one. A light fabric canopy, hung from a ceiling hook or from the beam itself, raises a soft sky between you and the beam, and feng shui holds that the space above you opens again. Hang it high, so it lifts the room rather than lowering it.

If you own the place: the lasting answer is to box the beam in behind a flat ceiling of drywall or wood, so nothing shows over the bed. It is optional; moving the bed already does the most.

Questions people ask

Does a decorative beam count?

Yes. Feng shui reads the shape it sees, not the load a beam carries: a beam that shows over the bed bears down the same whether it holds up the roof or was added for looks, and the same fixes apply.

What if the whole ceiling has beams?

Find the widest gap between two beams and set the bed beneath it, running the same way as the beams, so the lines pass beside you instead of across you. Where no gap is wide enough, let the headboard and nightstands take the weight; an owner can close the ceiling flat above the bed.

Is a beam over the sofa or the desk the same?

Yes. Wherever people sit or sleep for hours, feng shui reads a beam overhead as the same weight: over the sofa, the desk, the dining table and the stove as much as over the bed. Beam over the sofa or the table →

What about a sloped ceiling over the bed?

Feng shui reads the low side of a slope as a beam, and chi grows close and heavy there. Put the bed on the high side of the room, and give the low side a warm wall light, which lifts it, rather than the head of the bed. The sloped ceiling rule →
